What is gamma-butyrolactone?
Gamma-butyrolactone is a colorless liquid used as a solvent and chemical intermediate. In legitimate industrial contexts, it may be associated with specialty cleaning, polymer-related applications, coatings, and chemical manufacturing.
Its useful solvent characteristics do not eliminate its risks. GBL can be absorbed through several exposure routes, including inhalation of vapor, ingestion, and contact with skin. It is also severely irritating to the eyes, and high-level exposure can cause severe neurological and respiratory effects.
